Mathematics

Maths at Our School

At our school, we use White Rose Maths as the foundation for our mathematics curriculum across the school. White Rose provides a carefully sequenced progression of mathematical knowledge and skills, ensuring that children build on their learning year by year.

We adapt the White Rose materials to meet the needs of our pupils and our school, drawing on Mastery approaches to develop secure mathematical understanding. Our aim is for children to develop fluency, confidence and a deep understanding of the mathematics they are learning, rather than simply learning procedures or completing calculations.

Developing Mathematical Fluency

Mathematical fluency is an important part of our approach. Children are given regular opportunities to practise key facts and skills so that they become increasingly accurate, efficient and confident when working mathematically.

Alongside fluency, we place a strong emphasis on children understanding why methods work. Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to explore mathematical concepts, make connections, explain their thinking and apply their knowledge in different contexts.

Our teaching incorporates the key principles of Mastery Mathematics, including:

  • Developing a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts.
  • Using practical resources and visual representations to support understanding.
  • Making connections between different areas of mathematics.
  • Providing opportunities for children to reason and explain their mathematical thinking.
  • Developing fluency through regular practice and retrieval.
  • Challenging pupils to apply their understanding to increasingly complex problems.

Professional Development and the Maths Hub

We are committed to continually developing the quality of mathematics teaching across our school. Our staff are currently engaging in professional development with the Maths Hub through the Primary Maths Specialist Programme (PMSP).

This programme is supporting staff to deepen their subject knowledge, develop their understanding of effective Mastery approaches and strengthen the consistency of mathematics teaching across the school.

Through ongoing professional development, collaboration and reflection, we are continuing to develop a mathematics curriculum that enables every child to become a confident, resilient and successful mathematician.

Our Aim

We want our pupils to leave our school with strong mathematical foundations, the confidence to tackle challenges and the ability to use mathematics meaningfully in everyday life. Most importantly, we want children to see mathematics as something they can do, understand and enjoy.
